Leaving Something in People: Juniel Receives the 2026 Young Knight of Service Award

Football player, Smash Bros competitor, music maker and future IT pro, 15-year-old Juniel helps younger kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence and spent his summer volunteering with For One Child Foundation.

At the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, the younger kids know they can count on Juniel.

As one of the older members, he helps them with homework and with their daily goals, so they can stick to their plans and succeed. It's the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes service that is easy to overlook, but not here.

On November 14 at Knights, Crowns & Community, For One Child Foundation will honor Juniel with the 2026 Young Knight of Service Award for his service in the community, including a summer spent volunteering with the Foundation.

What Service Means

For Juniel, service is simple: "Putting your own time and convenience aside to help others."

Mentoring younger kids has taught him a lot about himself. "I learned that in helping others you need to meet them where they are, that it's okay to ask for help, and that patience is the key to success in any project."

Why Community Matters

"Community is built on the visions of different minds," Juniel says. "Being involved in community work builds character and gives a lot of people a sense of belonging."

If he could make one change, he'd start more programs that help communities with all kinds of needs.

A Summer With For One Child

Juniel brought that same dedication to For One Child Foundation, the organization hosting Knights, Crowns & Community. He spent his summer volunteering with us, helping to develop our new website.

He also created and designed our event backdrop. That's his work on the laptop screen in the photo below.

Inspired at Home

Juniel's greatest inspiration is his mother. "She inspires me every day. For as long as I can remember, she has worked in nonprofits and volunteered with many different organizations. She is the most selfless person I know and admire."

His mother, Juniliz Lacend, is being honored this year too, with the 2026 Knight of Service Award. Two Knights of Service in one family!

Looking Ahead

Juniel's plan: graduate from high school, go to college, and build a career in information technology.

What This Award Means

"I wasn't expecting any awards, but it gave me a great feeling of accomplishment," Juniel says. "It proved that my dedication, consistency, and effort did not go unnoticed."

"Legacy is not about leaving something for people, it's about leaving something in people. If I can impact one person or many in my lifetime, that will be good enough for me." — Juniel, inspired by Peter Strople

His Message to Other Kids

"Believe in all that you do, and don't give up because one person tells you no. Keep striving until your message reaches where you want it to go."

We'll celebrate Juniel at Knights, Crowns & Community on Saturday, November 14, 2026. Thank you to everyone joining us for a sold-out evening honoring the young people leading the way.
